10 Things Americans Think EUROPEANS Aren't Ready To Hear
In this video, Christopher Russell talks about things that Americans Think Europeans Aren't Ready To Hear about their country, society and infrastructure. There are many things that were found but this video is narrowed down to just 10 things. All items are opinion based, and will be replied to from an opinion based standpoint. Since having lived in both the US, and Europe (Germany), there could be some validity to the responses. Is America right about what they believe about Europe? Or is there some validity and/or purpose to how Europeans operate? We can talk about it in the comments, but please stay respectful.

    See, here's the USian centrism again, assuming people bring up the violence in the US just because you're soooo special, we just want to shut you up... We bring it up because you lot can't stop insulting every other nationality, so much so, you don't even think you're doing it any more. Every other sentence you breathe at other nationalities somehow conveys that we're lesser, or the US is best. Even those who will admit (usually begrudgingly) that the US is flawed still assume they have the upper hand in conversations, to the point that even the injustices in USian society are used to assert dominance, like when USian leftists consider themselves 'better' leftists because they somehow have it harder... We bring it up in an exasperated attempt to get you lot to see reason and to start getting at the REAL root of your issues. We CARE about these things and we want you to FIX them, but you're deep, deep, in denial.

    In the past, a *well-driven* manual transmission was more powerful and more fuel efficient. Automatic transmission technology surpassed that mark decades ago. Manual transmission is no longer more efficient, and manual shifting places more strain on the engine (manual transmissions last longer, but the *engines on automatics last longer). Which means - the basic thing that some Americans (not this one :) ) find attractive about a manual transmission is the illusion of greater control, and the illusion that they are driving 'better'. Which pretty much sums up more situations than just cars.

    • @KurtFrederiksen
      @KurtFrederiksen 13 дней назад

      "Automatic transmission technology surpassed that mark decades ago." What automatic transmission still don't give you is that instant down shift that a manual transmission gives you, if you use it correctly. Engines with automatic transmissions doesn't last longer because of less strain but because people don't 'drive' their cars. Automatic transmissions hold you back as a driver. It's easy if you're an American with those oversized engines in your cars, but the small nimble European and Japanese cars in Europe you actually have to drive the car and that makes a big difference. Driving a truck I love the automatic transmission. Driving a 1.4 L gasoline engine car I don't have the patience to wait for the automatic transmission to shift down when there's a gab in the traffic. I can evaluate and shift into the correct gear in a manual transmission for the maneuver in 1/4 of the time it takes for the automatic to get to some approximation of what I need. If you don't know how to drive a car the automatic will always be a better option, but knowing how to drive a car, the manual transmission is better and faster on the narrower European roads. Having excessive amount of power also makes automatic transmissions better even if you're only a fairly competent driver. But again in Europe with its lighter cars, narrower streets, sharper corners and so on, excessive power is detrimental to your driving as you want your controls to be nimble and responsive without being jerky. Something that is hard to accomplice with too much power in small cars.

Racism is not bound to any country its everywhere and always has been. Ofc European care about the school shootings, we wonder how adults are not able to make the country safer. silly statement by the way to think Europeans dont care for children. my country has the most happy children in the world so i think i have a saying.

    I can offer you some pushback on number 10. Not in case you talk about "food", but when americans come around with their "greatest country" gist. (You did mention healthcare, but somehow made it all about shootings towards the end, why ?) Not mentioning, reminding rather, those americans about those horrible and total failures of their society as gunlaws, healthcare, prison-, jailing and judiciary system, policing culture or parental leave and social security is a disservice. There simply are americans that do not realize how subpar the US actually is and how far it has fallen behind the western standard for a civilized country. For many europeans those US citizens that really want to sell their country as the best in all of history need to realize that in reality their country is not even in the top division, not to mention somewhere close to the top. Many americans simply do not know and you know they don't because americans are never told the truth. They are lied to that their country is the greatest and the best. It is a culture of ignorance towards these facts.

    Automatic vs manual is very much a matter of taste and situation. I'll drive an automatic if I have to, but my brain is wired for manual so auto requires extra concentration. The lack of a clutch pedal is a handicap, and the brake pedal being twice as wide in an auto screws up my reflexes. BTW, you can drive from NY to LA in about 24 hours. Not legally, but hey. :D

  • @capusvacans

    Automatic transmission is better than manual? Uhm, only for bad drivers and for ppl who are constantly stuck in city trafic having to constantly alternate between 1st and 2nd which can become tedious. In all other cases manual is superior. Less fuel usage You don't constantly end up in the wrong gear, which means you don't need a stronger engine to compensate for being in the wrong gear. It also allows you more control over acceleration as it won't shift into a higher gear and "nerf" your acceleration when you don't want it to. You are more focussed on the road, because you are operating a machine and don't have a free hand to text or whatever. Also, you need to constantly asses what gear you need to shift into for upcoming corners/traffic etc (and if you drive an manual for a while, you will do this automatically, as automatically as you put food in your mouth with a fork instead of shoving it up your ear.) It provides better control over the car. Both in braking, accelerating and cornering. Less maintenance. Cheaper in purchase It's simply more fun for ppl who like driving a car. If you just want to cruise around, sure automatic is perfect for you, but for actual driving, there is no contest, manual wins every time. There is a reason why most racing cars don't derp around with automatic gearboxes (sry dragracing isn't racing, it's just accelerating). Most use sequential gearboxes exactly because this allows you to get every last bit of speed out of the machine, which you will always do better than a computer. I drive a little 1L engined kia nowadays, and eventhough it has a small engine, it's surprisingly snappy. I've driven the automatic version of it aswel, that thing was simply terrible in every way, it would need at least a 1.6L engine to compensate for the automatic gearbox constantly shifting a gear too high. Sry man, but automatic gearboxes are pretty terrible, easy? sure, but terrible nonetheless.

    Honestly those are not some kind of universal, set-in-stone truths but - mostly - subjective and fairly generalizing opinions. You should open your something like this probably with a disclaimer that there is no such thing as *A* "European" or *A* "American", since Europe, in particular, is such a divers continent that you will have trouble finding people with comparable opinions on most topic in the same city let alone across intra-European borders. Example: Me, as a European, does not care about Football, Soccer or whatever you want to call it. I care even less about whatever the americans are playing, eggball, stickball or the one with the metal hoops.

      @@ChristopherLRussell This is a very racist comment, probably due to ignorance. First of all, immigrants and refugees/asylum seekers are completely different, both in terms of legal status and reasons for the relocation. A migrant may choose to relocate for myriad reasons: economic, cultural, ideological, love, family, career... while refugees and asylum seekers move out of necessity (war, climate, safety) and in most cases is either impossible to go back (place or origin is still at war or destroyed) or it's life-threatening, like LGBTQ+ people that risk being killed or incarcerated in their places of origin. The idea that Europe "opened its doors" to immigrants is just false and not backed up by data. First of all, there has actually been an increased enforcement and prosecution of illegal crossings in the last decade, which is the opposite of opening the doors, sometimes to very brutal consequences (like the at least 20 people killed in the Melilla Massacre in 2022). And if we have a look at statistics, only 6% of the residents of the EU are non-EU citizens. In that 6%, 30% are Swiss, 30% Australian, 19% Israeli, 14% from the USA and 4% from Turkey. Another key number I would like to highlight: 7563 people died while trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea between 2021 and 2023. The idea that Europe is opening its doors to Middle-Easterners and that somehow this has severely backfired is just far-right racist and Islamophobic rhetoric and outright false. And yes, like other commenters already pointed out, the highest influx from asylum seekers and refugees from this background happened after the disastrous US and NATO operations Irak, Afganistan and Syria and its disastrous consequences. Interesting how for the racists these people pose a threat to the European society but the Ukranians seeking asylum in the EU don't... (just to clarify, they don't pose any threat either). So please, stop propagating far-right propaganda and misinformation, if there's something we don't need in Europe is more racism

That´s why we love puppies but are not so keen on loving insects. later just are so much different to us. The thing is not if you are racist but if you manage to overcome your own racism. Hello from Switzerland, I agree with you that automatic transmissions are much more comfortable on country roads, even in cities. On motorways, at least the older transmissions are less efficient (slightly lower top speed, higher consumption) than manual transmissions. But I hope everyone has fun on mountain roads (and we have a lot of them), especially in winter with snow and ice, you'll definitely be more comfortable with a manual transmission. Point 5: yes, toilets should be free, however; when I imagine what some public toilets looked like when they were still free, you only went in if you had no other choice. Today, especially the train station toilets here, cost CHF 2 (if I'm not mistaken), but I have a toilet that is absolutely clean, I can sit down undisturbed, there is paper; that's definitely worth the two bucks to me. Point 9, sure, traveling around to one of the neighboring states is certainly easier than to Europe (the EU does not include all of Europe, by the way), but do you have such different languages, cultures, ways of life in the other states? Hardly. If you just go south in our country, you feel and notice that you are getting closer to the more Merritan/Italian lifestyle (in the same country), the same if you go west and experience parts of the French "savoir-vivre" and we are still in the same country where the different ways of life find mutual acceptance. Regarding point 10, I just have one question: when will we start to tackle these problems, especially the health system? I agree that it is hard to stop bad people from doing predictable things, but here too we should think about where the problems and "motives" lie and how to address them.

Most just lacked a proper education in their own field to make use of that and advance to the position most beneficial to themselves and the company. 10. If course we care. I had kids die in my arms in theatre when i helped building mobile hospitals and refugee camps in the middle east decades ago. I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter how your kid died. Whether in war, accident or one of those school shootings. The hurt is the same. 11. Yes. Yes. Yes. True. No Europeans could never even come close to american tourists abroad. To me it rather seems, that Americans can't grasp, how big (and diverse) the rest of the world is, especially compared to the U.S.. About the school shootings: Imagine someone banging his head against the wall, over and over again, and then complaining about headaches. And whenever you tell him, that - if he'd stop banging his head against the wall, the headache would go away, but if he won't stop, he has no right to complain about the headache, he tells you, he can't stop, because his right to bang his head against the wall is in the constitution and that there's also no connection between that banging and the headache, then there's just no other way to deal with such a level of stupidity and denial of proven causality. And btw.: School shootings are just what makes it into the news. And crime of course. But what about the insane numbers of gun related accidents? There comes a point, when no one is buying it anymore, when you tell them, it doesn't happen on purpose.

    Optimism is a great thing, if you are in a situation with little hope. For example, think about women in Afghanistan. For them being hopeful is necessary. It is good, so they do not give up. But the USA, the mightiest and most rich country, they being just optimistic is terrible. They claim to be the leader of the free world. Not some small country which just managed to start a school system, that could help regular families out of forcing their children to work when they get 6 years old. Think about a flight. What do you want the pilot to be? An optimist, who is sure everything will be fine, or a pessimist who thinks about of the dangers and double checks everything so that nothing goes wrong? Also, no one (at least from people who I know that say US-americans are uncultured) says this because they never left the USA. To be interested in other cultures does not need to visit their countries. But what even is US-american culture? Mainly the take aspects from other cultures around the world and turn them into a form diluted so much, that these globuli thinks are similar and then use it to make much money with. If someone wants to make money with foreign culture, thats okay, but pay these cultures some respect. If you do not care about other cultures, develop an own culture, which is more than just "USA great, rest of the world stupid" and just money, money, money. If you someone is interested in other cultures, maybe try to learn their language. Most germans know a second language, even though we dub any show and translate nearly every literature into german. Especially in the modern times, If I want to learn lets say swedish, I do not have to visit sweden, to practise. I can find swedish people on the internet and talk with them in their language. I also wonder why US-children spend 12 years of school to then start in college as a freshmen. The fist 3 semesters are often just stuff most europeans already learned, if they had 12 years of school. And some 'muricans then claim, they have to know more, because a bachelors degree in germany takes only 3 years.

    So lets see what I'm not ready to hear as a European... I just wonder who created that list of rants. #1: That's not an issue at all as tech advanced over time. The first automatic transmissions were horrible, but thats a thing of the past. I drive both, manual and automatic but I prefer automatic as well. #2: We have similar issues in our countries as well. They are just not so publicly visible. However, I don't understand why people in the States believe the lies they are told and continue to follow the liars when the facts simply reflect a different reality. I sometimes just miss the use of common sense. #3: Yeah, it's a fact. But it's a double sided sword. As long as those immigrants are willing to integrate and being honest, I don't have a problem. But there are many who try to misuse our hospitality, destroy our cultural values etc. And of course other countries who are using immigration to destabilize our society. #4: Just count the amount of worldwide viewers in world championships for both kinds of sport and then think again whats obviously more popular. #5: You (mostly) get what you pay for. However you call it, it's a shitty place. But its hilarious to call it a bathroom or restroom at public places. I neither want to take a shower or nap in this room. #6: I clearly distinguish between the people and your government. #7: I know those differences, just wonder whats the point you're trying to make. #8: Don't want to discuss this topic here as it would need an own discussion due to it's complexity. #9: It's not about visiting, it's about openness to other world views, cultures etc. I think in average European people are more interested and also want and do know more about Americans in regards of history, geography, politics and culture than Americans about Europe. #10: Its just a sad topic and horrifying to see the more and more increasing spiral of violence, IMHO caused by populism, hate, fear and the lobbyism behind. It makes me just sad for those affected in one or another way because it always turns out to be a lose-lose situation (besides those lobbyists in the background). Bonus: To sum it up, I have been several times in the US and been in contact with Americans for private and business reasons. I think I've experienced it all, from them being very welcoming and friendly people to lot's of funny, sometimes hilarious incidents, to some times of misuse of power by authorities or even scary moments like looking into a gun pointed at me. Overall I like the American people and partly also their different thoughts and approaches of doing something. I think we both can learn from eachother to become better.

    Very interesting take. A good basis for discussions, but with some underlying misconceptions. One thing, which is regularly overlooked by our american friends is, that the cultural influx from the USA into Europe is way more significant than the other way around. Like with every medal, there are two sides. And I think, we Europeans have good reasons to be critical to some of the American developments, which sometimes swap over to the continent without appreciation. The most critical, of course, is the comparatively high level of violence in the USA. And the reason for that are by a far extend, based in social inequalities. We've been fighting against that for generations. It was a long way from the times of the Manchester capitalism to the modern welfare states, causing plenty of victims. And we're proud of it. So, having political parties and tycoons in the US with more accumulated wealth than some smaller European nations, who openly hate these achievements we're on alert. And I do not think, that this is disrepectful to the victims. As we follow these incidents with high empathy, we just do not want that over here.

Good for unfiltered opinions, because people think they don’t have to behave like humans, because their own opinion is mandantory. But internet comment sections are not what all Americans or Europeans think of each other. I hope we still know, that the internet is not our real life. Yet. My personal experiences with Americans are always more important to me than what I read in random comments. As in every personal contact it is nice when we meet somebody, we can agree with and if we don’t agree: Great, perhaps we can learn something new. But being judgemental often is a lazy decision. I don’t fully agree with some of the points - but I appreciate different cultural backgrounds.

Nor are they necessarily our most authentic selves. Every now and again, we need a comment like yours to remind us. So thank you. 🙏🏾

    In my experience, the jokes about school shootings are mostly satire or sarcasm. It shows our lack of understanding and anger about it rather than a lack of compassion. But have a discussion with an NRA gun junkie and you'll know what no compassion means. IMAO

      Exactly, nobody makes fun about "innocent kids" but uses counter arguements because of the American gun culture. But it is not just the NRA. It is about the mind of all people who push back against reasonable regulations. I mean, my personal opinion: nothing agains owning weapons, it works just fine in Switzerland and even in Germany (hunters, sport shooter, collectors). So the difference surely is about acceptance of regulations and nobody needs a tank in his backyard ... yet.

    If you consider that the Puritans, the first settlers in the USA, did not come to the USA because they were “expelled”, but because they did not want to put up with their different neighbors in Europe, you can say that racism is in the genes of the USA. Doesn't the USA still celebrate Thangsgiving today, with which the Puritans wanted to express their “gratitude” to the inhabitants. The same inhabitants they later began to exterminate? Can you get any more hypocritical about racism?

    • @ChristopherLRussell
      @ChristopherLRussell 16 дней назад

      ...again, don't take this stuff up with me. I didn't PROMOTE anything. I didn't create racism either. I just said that it exists. What was there for me to be hypocritical about?😅 Don't be so sensitive, friend. Are you the European that these topics are referring to? Is that why the defensives? Relax. Thanks for stopping through.

    You do realize that the land area of Europe is slightly larger than that of the USA? Europe -> Area: 10,523,000 km² - Population: 746 million (2020) - Time zones 5 USA: Area: 9,525,067 km² - Population: 334 million (2023) - Time zones 5 Many Americans equate the size of Europe with that of the EU out of ignorance. Don't make the same mistake

    • @ChristopherLRussell
      @ChristopherLRussell 16 дней назад

      You might have missed the context. I think the person that actually said that (wasn't me), was speaking on the idea that a lot of Europeans think that Americans don't even see their own country in full, where as any given European can see THEIR country in full because it pales in comparison. The US (as a country) vs any individual European country. But keep in mind, I got this list of things online. They are not mine. Also, I don't make these videos as a testament of how knowledgeable I am on geography. Honestly I don't care about trivial things like this. They just make for good video topics. I'm not coming at you, by the way. Just informing you in case you watch any more of my content and see more of the same.👍🏾 Thanks for watching.

      @@briocmonard1752 I can drive through four villages here in Germany in 15 minutes. I can drive to France in 45. Back in the place I was born, the nearest town is 20 minutes away and it's shittier than my hometown. Canada is about 4 hrs drive. The point, land mass being what it is. The concentration of cities and villages seem to be closer in contrast. Then there are the oceans. I for one m glad it's too expensive to fly to Europe from the US. 😉

    I like my manual transmission until I am in bumper to bumper traffic. People here in Germany have told me that Germany's government is just as bad. I always reply, yeah, but it's in a language I am not fluent in, so I can ignore it. Immigration here has two negative facets in my experience as an immigrant: The immigrant's lack of desire to integrate and the lack of employees at the Ausländeramt. (skipping a few) Europeans: IT IS VERY expensive to fly to Europe from the US. Plus, most people just don't have the amount of vacation away from work to take an expensive two or three week vacation. Also, good because it's loud enough here already... Europe makes better pizza!!! just sayin... 🫡🇩🇪🚚

    As a global traveler, I can honestly say it's increasingly taking an emotional and physical toll on me to return to the U.S. I find myself crying on the return flight. The energy in the U.S. is dense and literally weighs you down the moment you get off of the plane. I know for a fact that I am called to live abroad. Great video.

      I relate to this SO much. I wish everyone was tuned in enough to recognize energies of the universe and hire it communicates through us. That feeling you get when returning to the states, I used to get all the time too. And now I know exactly what that is, as I’ve stated in the video. I’m sorry that you have to cry in your return to the US, but I wish for you one day, to find your “home base” (since you’re a global traveler) somewhere that suits your soul better. It WILL happen for you. 🙂 Thank you and I appreciate your taking time to watch the video. ❤️
